Submit your self-assessment return online & save tax!

The deadline to submit paper personal tax returns draws ever nearer – the 31st October. In our experience many contractors and freelancers may benefit from accounting advice and by submitting their returns online.

Our recent findings show that many contractors and freelancers may be underestimating the allowances and reliefs they can claim in their tax returns or may not be including their full expenses.

In addition, many may be incurring penalties for late returns. Many self-assessment taxpayers who send in their paper returns will end up doing so late and so incur a £100 penalty.

We would encourage people to submit their returns online. It makes life easier for you. Your tax is calculated automatically; you receive an acknowledgement when you’ve submitted your return. In addition, your return is processed faster, meaning that if you’ve made an overpayment of tax, you’ll be repaid more quickly.

HMRC prefers this method too because it reduces the man-hours spent trawling through thousands of pieces of paper.

There is still time to make the transition from paper to online filing - go to HMRC’s website and select “Register (new users)”. You’ll then be able to submit your return online and relax knowing that you have more time to do so.
